Catherine Deneuve as Peau d'Ane

Peau d’Ane, Donkey Skin, is my favorite Perrault fairy tale, and a full post here on this powerful story of lust, incest, love and morality is long overdue.

In the meantime, Valentine’s Day gives me this opportunity to link to this excerpt of the wonderful musical adaptation by Jacques Demy, starring Catherine Deneuve as the title character, and Micheline Presle as the Red Queen. The setting is no other than the Chateau of Chambord, itself a fairy tale come true, and the mysterious malady that ails the Prince (Jacques Perrin) and baffles the Court physicians is, of course, lovesickness.

Enjoy, and happy Valentine’s Day!

  1. Yvonne, I am not surprised, because this tale is less popular outside France than Cinderella, Snow White, etc. The donkey skin is a striking and highly symbolic element of the story. What you write encourages me to complete my post about Peau d’Ane. :)

I must live under a rock. Never heard of this, but looks interesting.
I can’t imagine a beautiful woman wearing a donkey skin.. I do love her she is the most beautiful woman in the world. yvonne

  3. Thanks so much, Penny. I have begun writing my “serious” Donkey Skin post. I enjoy the French original more with each rereading. The film too goes well beyond its beautiful visuals.

I loved Donkey Skin, posted on it for a booklist online. I had to read it after Catherine said it was her favorite and I never heard of it. the French language is beautiful. Thanks for that video, it was like reliving the story. Now I have to tweet this post.! Thank you for the whole post.

  5. I haven’t tried it, Kate, but it sounds like a standard French “cake.” About Chambord, isn’t it an amazing, surreal place?

  6. Kate Warren says:

I wonder if anyone has tried that recipe?

Chambord is one of my favorites. Beautiful, beautiful chateau!
