I still remember hearing her for the first time, on television. What an impression she made on the child I was then…
Listen to her, with Marilyn Horne, in the magical Duo des Fleurs, from Delibes’s Lakmé:
Ive heard this before so many times! I never thought to find out who sung it so wonderfully!
No, Penny, she won’t be forgotten, thanks to the magic of modern recordings. When you think of the legendary singers of earlier centuries, whose voices we will never hear…
I just rented a bunch of her PBS appearances from netflix including one with Placido Domingo.
and there are others available. I am sure there are dvd rentals or downloads of her works available in other countries. so I guess she really will always be alive in our hearts.
I did not. Thanks for the info!
Did you know she was honored with a Kennedy Center award 6 years ago? It was mentioned on the evening news the other night.
I love Delibes, with a particular fondness for Lakme and the Flower Duet. What a gift Dame Joan had!
No matter how many times I’ve heard (and loved) the Flower Duet, *that* performance gave me goosebumps.
