18th century costumes at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art recently acquired a collection of 250 pieces, including many 18th century items, to expand its Costume and Textiles Department, which you can browse online. More details here.
Unfortunately these new acquisitions, which are supposed to put LACMA on a par with the Met in this regard, are not to be displayed until 2010. We’ll have to wait…

Thank you Catherine for letting us know. How wonderful too! Of course this is great for me for I live 5 minutes away from LACMA.
The shoes are fabulous!
Felio, you are fast! I just posted this. This should be a wonderful exhibit and I too look forward to seeing it/
Lovely Catherine,
now i have to look them up in the met. and one of my freinds was complaining that i never get out of my house.
Ooh, looks lovely! My favorites are always the shoes. For some reason, shoes from the past bring history more alive to me than any other artifact. Thanks for posting! =)
You are most welcome. Meghan. True, these dainty shoes are a wonder, with their very high and rounded arch.
What a gorgeous dress. I am endlessly fascinated with how people clothed themselves so far back in history. For Christmas I received the most elegant set of Fashion books (heavy coffee table books) from the Kyoto Costume Institute–I especially love the first volume of earlier fashions (many of them are French).
Lucky you! Must be a gorgeous book, judging by the website:http://www.kci.or.jp/archives/index_e.html
What a stunning collection. I was just looking at the section on the 18th century…amazing that so many pairs of shoes survived. Thank you for the info. And thank you too, Catherine, for the listing. I am honored.
